Statement from the province re: wildcat strike terminations (article here: globalnews.ca/news/696830/correctional-peace-officers-terminated-for-involvement-in-wildcat-strike-aupe/): Statement on the termination of two staff at the Fort Saskatchewan Correctional Centre The actions of several staff who abandoned their post on the evening of April 26 at the Fort Saskatchewan Correctional Centre have been investigated. It was concluded that the actions of only a handful of staff merited significant disciplinary action. Two of the staff were terminated today. The two staff had their jobs terminated because they were supervisors who abandoned their post and in doing so, posed significant risk to the public, inmates, and especially their colleagues, for their role in leaving the centre virtually unmanned. They were also disciplined for disobeying a direct order to admit new inmates that same evening. This action was taken on a case-by-case basis after reviewing evidence, including video surveillance footage. This approach was confirmed in a letter dated April 30 from the Alberta Public Service Commissioner to AUPE president Guy Smith, which reads in part: “With respect to your request for striking employees, it is not our intention to seek retribution and following a return to work we will consider all circumstances on a case by case basis and act thoughtfully and in a measured and appropriate fashion.” This is what we committed to, and this is what we have done. Only a handful of staff are facing significant disciplinary action, out of approximately 2,000 staff.
