Statement of ARMM Gov. Mujiv S. Hataman on the passing of Abdulmari A. Imao The Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao mourns the passing today of Abdulmari Asia Imao, National Artist for Visual Arts and esteemed son of Sulu. We extend our deepest condolences to his bereaved family as the region shares their grief. Imao, “a sculptor, painter, photographer, ceramist, documentary film maker, cultural researcher, writer, and articulator of Philippine Muslim art and culture”, was the first and only Moro national artist to date. He was born and raised in Jolo, Sulu. The National Commission for Culture and the Arts cited him for popularizing “the indigenous ukkil, sarimanok and naga motifs” and instilling it as “original Filipino creations in the consciousness of the Filipino nation and other people.” He brought Moro craftsmanship to greater heights and made us all proud. His work and legacy will forever live with us. Again, we join the nation in mourning the loss of a great and beloved artist. Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilaihi Rajiun.
