States that have decriminalized medical marijuana average of 25 percent fewer deaths from overdoses of opioid analgesics. Prescription drug overdose is the number one cause of accidental death in the US. The Medical Doctors who are against legal cannabis have been bought and paid for by leading pharmaceutical firms which rely on products that could be easily replaced marijuana. When these individuals are quoted in the media, their drug-industry ties have not been revealed. Example: Dr. Herbert Kleber of Columbia University has been quoted in the press and in academic publications warning against the use of marijuana, which he stresses may cause wide-ranging addiction and public health issues. He is a paid consultant to leading prescription opioid painkiller manufacturers that face rising criticism because these painkillers are highly addictive and cause about 16,000 deaths a year, more than heroin and cocaine combined. Researchers view marijuana as a a safe alternative to opioid products like OxyContin, and there are no known overdose deaths from pot.
