Statue of Liberty Reopens Today. How appropriate that, after being flooded and damaged in Storm Sandy, the Statue of Liberty is reopening today in honor of Independence Day. My visits to the Statue have been some of the most moving of my life. Thinking about my grandfather coming to New York in the early 1900s, and spending days on a ship coming over, and then seeing New York Harbor and freedom still gives me chills. A Sicilian teen must have been both frightened and excited about starting over in a new country. I hope that he would be proud of the generations that have followed him. Happy Independence Day, Lady Liberty.
