Status Update By Joel Jason 2013 Oct 8 Tue 27th Week in Ordinary Time Jon 3:1-10/ Ps 130:1b-2, 3-4ab, 7-8/ Lk 10:38-42 Opt for the Better Three kids were in a contest on whose is the better uncle. First kid said, “My uncle is so intelligent. He is a lawyer. When he speaks about the Constitution to a 200 people, only around 100 will understand him. That’s how smart he is.” Second kid countered, “My uncle is better. He is scientist. When he speak about quantum physics to 200 people, it’s lucky if 50 understand him.” Third kid chimed in, “My uncle is better than yours. He is a priest. When he delivers a homily to 200 people, no one understands him.” Over and above the good, there will always be something/someone better. Today Jesus speaks of Martha choosing the “better portion”. Mary was concerned with hospitality and hospitality is good. Martha chose intimacy and she is commended for it. This Gospel passage is not about sibling rivalry. Jesus is not pitting Mary against Martha. Jesus is simply stating: Over and above the good, there will always be something/someone better. The world is literally littered with goods from a generous God. It is our part to discern to sift through these goods and learn to prioritize and put them into a well discerned hierarchy. The gifts that God has given us are given us not for their own sake. They are given to us to be the way to God, not in the way of God. There was a dying man who told his wife, “When I die, I want you to put in my coffin all of my money. I want to bring all of them with me.” The wife took all of the man’s money, deposited it on her bank account, then issued the man a check, and put the check in the man’s coffin. What would you want with you in your dying breath? What is the hierarchy of your values? Reflection: When was the last time you thank God because of the blessings that you had received? When was the last time that you humbled yourself before God and say “My God, all of these gifts is from yours, I offer them back for you? Prayer: Lord, teach me to be your humble servant and let me offer the gifts that I received from you by sharing them with other people. Amen.
