Status update from one of my Facebook friends who, like me, is buried under the terrible burden of student loan debt: "Brief Student Loan Update: After paying religiously for now, almost 10-12 years, I have watched my balance go UP, in total almost 12,000 above where it was when I started repaying, at roughly 700.00 a month for 7 years (67,200), and a year at 398.00 (4,776.00), and a year at 407.00 (4484.00), and roughly 6000.00 I paid as an under-grad, I still owe almost 92,000 in accrued interest charges on a 60,700 loan.... So, after close to 83,000. I am nowhere near being paid off. So, lesson learned, even after having paid almost 75,000 and then some back -I learned that I will be paid off sometime in MY MID 70s. Irony??"
