Stay Off Roads in Icy Conditions; Take Extra Care If Travel is Necessary With the potential for snow in Northern Indiana, a wintry mix in Central Indiana and freezing rain and sleet across Southern Indiana, Hoosiers should carefully consider if travel is necessary. Motorists are encouraged to avoid travel during and after the storm as road conditions are likely to be dangerous. Indiana State Police, Indiana Department of Transportation and the Indiana Department of Homeland Security are encouraging motorists to use these resources to assist in travel planning if they must be on the roads. Before heading out, residents should check the Indiana County Travel Advisory Map at in.gov/dhs/traveladvisory/. The map is updated with information from the county emergency management agencies and describes the conditions for a travel warning, watch, advisory and caution. A mobile version of the map is now available as an app and can be downloaded in the iTunes store and the Google Play store. Search for “Travel Advisory” to locate the app. A travel advisory is notification that road conditions are hazardous and will impede motorists ability to travel. A travel advisory at a warning level means the general public is stay off the roadways to keep routes clear for emergency personnel. Under a watch level, road conditions are still dangerous, and only essential travel is recommended. For road updates, please visit indot.carsprogram.org or call 800-261-ROAD. DO NOT call local law enforcement or 9-1-1 for road information. These lines need to be left open for emergency calls. Drivers are encouraged to delay a trip if possible, but if travel is necessary, let someone know the route, expected time of arrival, and how to make contact. Charge cell phones before leaving. Pack essential items such as high protein snacks, water, first aid kit, flashlight, warm blankets, extra prescription medications and important documents or information you might need during an emergency. If stranded, do not leave the car unless there is shelter nearby. Call for help. If unable to call for help, tie a brightly colored cloth to the antenna for rescuers to see. Run the engine for 10 minutes every hour to stay warm and keep the exhaust pipe free of blockage to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
