Steam up! There was another steam hauled special through Abergavenny on Saturday; there were meant to be two (luxury!), but ex GWR 5029 Nunney Castle was failed at the last moment with leaking stays, and the special was diesel hauled - thats becoming a rarity in itself. However, the second ran with steam, and kept time on the outward journey, despite the 13 coach load over some testing gradients. The steam section was Gloucester - Newport avoiding line (always best), - Hereford - Shrewsbury - Chester and return. The motive power was 2x ever reliable Black Fives; in BR days these locos were go anywhere, do anything machines, and the few preserved examples still do just that. Its a testimony to these medium powered locos, that on the last day of steam in August 1968, they were the most numerous of the 300 still working. The video, though brief, shows exactly what theyre good at.
