Steeldogs Strike Seven Past Bison The Bradfield Brewery Sheffield Steeldogs had a rare one game weekend with the Basingstoke Bison the visitors at iceSheffield on Sunday evening. The Steeldogs were missing Korhon, Payette, Wood, Pattison and Duncombe but welcomed Janis Ozolins back to the Pound. The opening period got off to a flying start with Ozolins on the starting line with Legue and Elliott. There seemed to be a palpable buzz in the crowd every time the Latvian took it the ice. Good pressure led to Calvert setting Legue up in the slot with the Canadian beating Skinns at 5.59. Legue and Ozolins were creating problems for the Bison back line which let Elliott bury the puck for 2-0 with 12.43 gone. The Dogs were becoming the dominant force, working the puck into the Bison D zone time and time again and at 14.54 Gibson scored an unassisted delayed penalty goal after hard work down low. The Bison came out refreshed in the 2nd period and took the early initiative; Ciaran Long got them on the board at 22:38. The Steeldogs began to create more opportunities and looked more threatening as the game progressed. Ozolins made a few pacey strides when Long hooked him and got a penalty for his efforts. The home team struck on the following power play, Morgan firing past Skinns set up by Legue and Ozolins. Basingstoke had the balance of play over the remainder of the period but hard work and the efforts of Dalibor Sedlar kept them out as the period finished 4-1 in Sheffields favour. With Legue sitting in the penalty box, Bison started the final period with a man advantage and Karpov made it count as he buried a Long shot that Sedlar couldnt control. Within two minutes the Bison scored again, Chinn capitalising from close range after Sedlars stick was knocked out of his hands. Basingstoke are a team you can never write off in a game and their two goal burst made Sheffield take stock and focus on their game plan. The Bison were attacking in waves and the Dogs rear-guard were scrambling to stay ahead and on a rare sortie into Bison territory Legue scored. With Smith in the box for holding, Legue fired his jets and left the Bison for dead, neatly completing his hat-trick short-handed. With just under 5 minutes to go Nicky Chinn tried to imprint Elliotts face on the boards and got a match penalty for checking to the head. With 57 seconds left Ozolins capped off a fabulous return with a power play goal, making the game 7-3. Basingstoke still had a goal in them with 17 seconds to go to the buzzer, Joe Greener completing the scoring. A 7-4 victory for the Steeldogs who were only assessed 8 penalty minutes, Sedlar faced 55 shots and Legue scooped 5 points in the game. Man of the match awards went to Doug Sheppard for the Bison and Jeff Legue for the Bradfield Brewery Sheffield Steeldogs. Your next home action is this Sunday (21st) when the Bracknell Bees visit iceSheffield for a KIDS GO FREE game facing off at 5.30.
