Stefan Edberg has helped Roger Federer regain the mental strength - TopicsExpress

Stefan Edberg has helped Roger Federer regain the mental strength that can guide him to a record eighth Wimbledon title, according to Goran Ivanisevic. Yet former Wimbledon champion Ivanisevic believes the new breed of super coach does not have the special formula for grand slam success. Ivanisevic coached Croatian compatriot Marin Cilic to the Wimbledon quarter-finals this year, while Federer is under the tutelage of his own childhood idol Edberg. Swiss grass master Federer will face Novak Djokovic in Sundays Wimbledon final, where victory would see him eclipse Pete Sampras seven All England Club titles. Djokovic has six-time grand slam champion Boris Becker in his corner, but Ivanisevic does not view the final as super-Boris versus super-Stefan. Im not super-Goran, and they are not super-Boris and super-Stefan, the 2001 Wimbledon champion told Press Association Sport. I dont think there are super coaches, but hopefully we can offer good advice about how to deal with the little things, and certainly the pressure. I dont ever want Marin to go through what I went through at times, and when I think about my Wimbledon final then thats when I remember what pressure can do. Your legs just go heavy, they go one way, the arms go another, and the head is all over the place. Even the great Roger Federer needs help controlling the mental pressure. Thats the one thing that no man ever masters, whatever they tell you. He has managed to do that though, hes over his back problems, and he looks as good as ever. Thats what Stefan is there for really: to help him keep that steel of focus that you need to win grand slams. Resurgent Federer has swept into his ninth Wimbledon final, dropping just one set and one solitary service game all tournament. The 32-year-old has shrugged off his wretched 2013 in fine style, beating back trouble to regain all the poise and style that deserted him in his dismal second-round exit in SW19 last summer. Swedish six-time grand slam champion Edberg has coached Federer since December 2013, with the immediate fruit a run to the last four at the Australian Open and now his ninth Wimbledon final. World number 29 Cilic produced his best-ever Wimbledon run under Ivanisevics tutelage, admitting the backing of such a role model has helped boost his career. Ivanisevic said the playing track record of coaches like Edberg and Becker can offer an almost intangible boost. Hopefully when guys like Roger look up to their box and see Stefan, see someone they grew up respecting, that can help calm them down, help them keep their focus, said the HSBC ambassador. Its not about super coaches: its about people who have been there before. There is no special formula to help players achieve the success they want. But any edge possible, thats what people look for: hopefully thats what we can give.
