(Stefanie) Hier was ledigheid nie die duiwel se oor kussing nie....Mooi so Boetas Metro left red-faced as bored boys unblock drain December 22, 2014 IT took two 10-year-old Uitenhage boys just 90 minutes to clear a blocked drain that residents had been battling for more than a month to get the municipality to attend to. Energetic best friends Wihan Wichers and Matthew Bauman decided to clean out the branches and leaves blocking the drain in Ross Gradwell Street in Vanes Estate to relieve their boredom. Residents had complained to the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality at least three times over the past month to no avail. Shrugging off their good deed yesterday, Handhaaf Primary Grade 4 pupil Matthew said they had seen it as an opportunity to play in the pool of water. “We have been on holiday for two weeks and were playing in the garden and decided to clean the drain because we were getting bored,” he said. “We each got a spade and took out all of the sand, leaves and branches that were stuck inside. It didn’t even take us long, only about an hour-and-a-half.” Albertyn Primary Grade 3 pupil Wihan said: “It feels good that all the people … are thanking us for cleaning the drain.” Uitenhage Garden Town Initiative chairman Dave McCleland said the blocked drain had been reported several times. “After three attempts at getting our metro to unblock a drain, it takes the initiative of two 10-year-old children to do it themselves for it to be resolved. “How shocking is that for service delivery in our town? “You have taught us grown-ups how to handle bad service delivery – get out and do it yourself still works better than waiting for somebody to do the job they have been paid to do,” McCleland said. Municipal spokesman Mthubanzi Mniki said: “We are not sure about the facts of this situation. We will need to do our own fact- finding and understand what actually happened from our side.”
