Steffner said in an email June 21 that she too “practiced prior review as the principal,” 2007-2011. But she did not contradict Ransavage on June 17 when he told his colleagues, “It appears that it’s never been used here.” Nor did she respond later when Lamp Editor-in-Chief Patrick Lin told the board that in the four years he had been part of the student paper, 2009-2013, the policy “was not enforced as it was this year.” The Hunterdon County Democrat’s coverage of the controversy led Steffner to invite Democrat Managing Editor Curtis Leeds to meet with her, Cooley and the Lamp editorial staff on June 14. During that meeting, Steffner told the board, Leeds said that prior review was a journalism industry standard. “He told the students, ‘Welcome to the real world,’” Steffner said. Leeds told the students that prior review is part of the foundation of modern journalism where editors - and sometimes layers of editors - review articles before they are published.
