In a career that spanned two years from 1983 to 1985, she won 8 out of 15 starts. At 3yrs old she went on to win the 1000 Guineas and produced her most notable performances in 1985, becoming the first filly to win the Coral Eclipse Stakes in the races 99 year history. She would go on after to defeat an exceptional field in the Champion Stakes. With her final racecourse appearance she became the first British-trained racehorse to win a Breeders’ Cup race, when she took the win in the Breeders’ Cup Turf. Trained by Clive Brittain, she is regarded as one of the greatest fillies of the modern era. She would be sent to Japan in 1996 to become a broodmare. In the book, A Century of Champions, Morris and Randall rated Pebbles 4th best British filly of the 20th century behind Pretty Polly, Sun Chariot and Sceptre. Pebbles was unique in more ways than just her success on the track. She always made for an interesting media story due to her assorted rather unique quirks. She was high strung and was frequently accompanied by a gelding named Come On The Blues (winner of the Royal Hunt Cup) who seemed to exert a calming influence upon her. Her trainer described her as “an extremely difficult horse to manage and one who could not be trained in the conventional way,” noting that she spent more time swimming than galloping. She was also known to consume a pint of Guinness a day. She was not a success as a broodmare, despite producing foals by prominent stallions such as Nureyev, Caerleon and Reference Point. None of her progeny came with the same distinguished success on the track. She was retired from breeding in 2002. Pebbles was humanely euthanized in September of 2005 at Fukumitsu Farm, Japan, due to the infirmities of old age.
