Stephanie Kwolek, the woman who invented Kevlar – the bullet-proof material used in body armour – has died at the age of 90. Her synthesis of the first liquid crystal polymer led to the development of Kevlar, now a critical part of bulletproof vests, helmets and other body armour components as well as a range of other applications like tyres, firefighter suits, boat hulls, fibre optic cables, fuel hoses, aeroplane and spacecraft parts and skis.
