Stephen Fry: The DUP are ‘bigots’ for bill to allow religious people to discriminate against gays December the 18th, 2014. By Joseph Patrick McCormick Source: Pinknews.co.uk Stephen Fry has waded into a debate around a bakery accused of homophobic for refusing to bake a cake, branding the DUP as “bigots”. In July, Asher’s Baking Company – based in Newtownabbey, Northern Ireland – refused the request of a gay rights activist for a cake showing the message ‘Support Gay Marriage’ above an image of the characters. The Equality Commission later found that this act broke anti-discrimination laws, and called for the bakery to apologise, but its manager vowed to instead “make a stand”. This week, the Commission warned in a 16-page legal letter that the bakery will face legal action if it does not settle the case soon. The broadcaster tweeted today with the comments about the party, after its attempts to introduce a conscience clause into equality legislation following a row around Asher’s Bakery, which faces legal action for refusing to bake a cake for a gay customer. .@tommydevlin1974 @News_Letter To be “slammed” by the bigots of the DUP is to be bathed in light and kissed by angels. I am content. — Stephen Fry (@stephenfry) December 18, 2014 Fry also urged his 8.2 million followers to sign a petition opposing the legislation put forward by the DUP which would allow businesses to refuse to serve customers based on religious grounds. He tweeted: “Once again the religious right twisting truth to present themselves as victims.” The DUP responded by reiterating its support for the bill.
