Stephen Hawking is probably the most famous sufferer of ALS. He was diagnosed with the disease at the age of 21 and given 2 years to live. The disease has left him paralysed and unable to move pretty much any part of his body. He is able to move a muscle in his cheek that he uses to control his speech synthesis machine. Despite this condition he has still been able to write a number of best-selling books and become a world famous physicist. He is now 72 and has defied the odds, given only 2 years to live he has survived over 50 years with ALS. People who dont have any compassion or understanding make fun of him for being confined to a wheelchair unable to move or speak. This is a man we should praise for his strength, for surviving so many years with a completely debilitating condition yet still keeping his sense of humour.
