Behind every great crime against humanity is the rancid notion of Exceptionalism which endows a people in their own minds with the status of The Chosen People who are by nature better than the rest in the eyes of God or Nature. From Manifest Destiny to the racial justifications of Lebensraum employed to kill twenty five million Russians who were considered "useless eaters" by the architects of the Holocaust, we have seen the rancid effect of the determination by a people to believe that they are in one way or another more human than are other human beings, and they are therefore empowered to determine the destinies of lesser people by force. Putin is completely correct that National Exceptionalism is a very dangerous idea. With the entrance of Al Qaeda Caucasus into the Syrian debacle, Putin is seeing his worst fears realized. It takes very little imagination to extrapolate the negative impact upon the Caucasus and upon the Russian Sphere of Influence if Al Qaeda is enabled to use the civil war to project power into Muslim Russia. Certainly he is correct to wonder what on earth the US can be thinking. After all we have tacitly been at war with Qaeda for a decade now. Bombing to influence political decisions within the borders of a Sovereign State is the game of terrorists. Are We terrorists? Do we aspire to become agents of terror? I hope not, but even liberals have bought into the absurd notion of bombing to save the children.
