Stephen King wrote about a fight where each opponent got to choose one weapon,(I think it was in the Gunslinger series), anyhow it reminds me of the World chess Championshionships.Traditionally the defending champion always seems to pick the format and conditions under which he will fight (his weapon). What is interesting is that they always seem to pick wrong. For instance Anand obviously feared Carlsen and therefore decided on a short match followed by faster time controls if the match was drawn after 12 games. His plan was perhaps to play for a long series of draws. Once Carlsen surprised him with two snappy wins from drawish looking endgames he was in dire trouble pretty much like the character in a King novel if they pick a dumb weapon to fight with. Also playing in front of his home crowd and with the media conferences after every match ended up putting severe pressure on him. He cracked like the defending champion in Kings novel when his opponent declared that his weapon would be a Hawk.
