Stepmom guilty of murder FIVE-year-old Gershwin Isaacs’s little hands were so swollen from beatings he’d received from his stepmother that he could not pick up a toy car he found lying in the sand. Instead, he was seen moving the car with the palm of his puffy hand. Not long afterwards he was dead. Yesterday, 10 years later, the Western Cape High Court found his stepmother, Natasha Hansen, guilty of his murder and of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm. The court found that Gershwin had been beaten on several occasions. He died of a head injury on May 28, 2004, said doctors. Medical evidence showed that Gershwin had several injuries that suggested he had been abused and assaulted. “Some of the injuries were old and some were fresh,” said Judge James Yekiso. He found that the State had proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt. Between March and May 2004, Hansen, Gershwin’s primary carer, repeatedly beat the boy at their home in Steenberg while his father, Russel Hansen, was at work.
