Steps to take if you are a victim of identity theft..... So you just found out that someone has stolen your identity. Maybe there were many unauthorized charges on your credit card or maybe fake accounts were set up in your name. What do you do? 1.Contact the Federal Trade Commission to report the situation either online or by phone. The FTC toll free number is: 877-438-4338 2.Report the problem to the various credit reporting agencies * Call Equifax at 800-525-6285 * Call Experian to report the fraud at: 888-397-3742 * Call Transunion at 800-680-7289 3.Call Social Security Fraud line at 800-269-0271 4. Contact your insurer. They might have coverage for ID theft and might provide someone to coordinate all this for you. 5.Contact all creditors with whom you name or identifying data have been fraudulently used. 8.Contact all financial institutions where you have accounts and inform them that an identity thief has compromised your name, and accounts or has created an account in your name without your authorization. You need to cancel these accounts and/or place stop payment orders. 9. If you have had checks stolen from you ( which happened to my dad) or bank accounts set up by an identity thief, contact the major check verification companies such as Check Rite Systems at 800-766-2748, ChexSystems at 800-428-9623, or Telecheck at 800-710-9898 10.Also, file a police report in the jurisdiction where your credit cards or checks were stolen. 11. If the thief had your social security number and address, you may want to file your tax return as soon as possible in order to avoid false claims for refunds by the thief. The earlier that you file your tax returns, the better. This should serve as a great checklist for you and your friends.
