Stereo imaging is something I get asked about a lot. There are many techniques to achieve wideness without mono compatibility problems. Width techniques include chorus/unison detuning, very small decay reverb, stereo offset, spectral panning. The list goes on and is virtually endless when combining techniques. With a mid/side EQ such as FF Pro-Q you can create frequency crossovers that are mid or side independent, and process mid, side, and frequency bands independently using a parallel processing chain (Lives instrument rack or ILs Patcher makes this easy). It doesnt have to stop there. You can flatten, process (saturate, filter, vocode, resynthesize, time stretch, etc) and repeat this process indefinitely. If you are designing a bass with width, be sure frequencies under 120hz are mono. The easiest way to do this is by putting a mid/side EQ after any processing, then highpass the side channel with a steep slope (36dB/oct or steeper) at 120hz. A light multiband compression only on the low band may be needed to level out the now-mono sub frequencies.
