Stereotypes are imprecise and often problematic, but they can also sometimes provide a useful rule of thumb for relating to others. For example, if my husband wants to relate to a man hes just met, he might make comments about sports, and it often allows them to strike up a conversation. Its a pity the assumption is that this phenomenon - as clumsy and cringeworthy as it might be - is necessarily motivated by such dark impulses, rather than the desire to relate.
