Steve Carell is officially the scariest man...what is this world - TopicsExpress

Steve Carell is officially the scariest man...what is this world coming too? My review of Foxcatcher right now. Directed by Bennett Miller (Moneyball), Foxcatcher tells the tragic true story of Olympic wrestling champion Mark Schultz (Channing Tatum) who is recruited by John du Pont (Steve Carell), paranoid-schizophrenic millionaire, to be apart of the Foxcatcher wrestling team that he is creating. Mark’s brother, Dave Schultz (Mark Ruffalo) soon interferes with du Pont’s plan and things to go the worst for the brothers. Foxcatcher is the most disturbing, creepy and most well acted movie I’ve seen all year. The three leads all give Oscar worthy performances including a career changing performance by Steve Carell. Let me start off by saying Steve Carell is unrecognizable in the role of John du Pont. Carell gives the performance of the year and just transforms himself into this disturbing, creepy, and disgusting man. Just to call him creepy is an understatement and this entire review can’t do him justice for what he’s done. This man is an actor and he gives it his all. Just the way Carell walks, talks and moves is just unnerving to watch. He is unrecognizable, I mean I knew he was in the movie and I forgot that he was in the movie until about the halfway point. When an actor can give a performance where you aren’t looking at him, but the character that is a sign he is amazing. He does what Heath Ledger did for The Joker, just an amazing performance that I hope he wins the Oscar for. I’m telling you, the performance of the year. But it’s Channing Tatum who proves to us he is an actor. He isn’t funny at all, this is a full on dramatic performance and he knocks it out of the park! First off, he’s massive in this movie. He looks like a freestyle wrestler. The man he moves around is the way a wrestler would. It wasn’t even his line delivery that amazed me. But his facial expressions showed off the tortured and vulnerable man that Mark was. One scene in particular had chills down my back and showed us that he is one of the best actors working to day. This is the most underrated performance of the year. Oh my God is Mark Ruffalo just amazing as David Schultz. He also is unrecognizable. Knew he was in the movie and forgot that. I was looking at the figure of David Schultz just as all of the previous actors did for their roles. He is the heart and soul of Foxcatcher and the most likeable character. He had this charming smile and a personality like no other. He cares about Mark and will do anything for him. Ruffalo deserves major Oscar consideration as Mark. He was a truly great man. That’s the thing, this is based on a true story. The very tragic true story of how du Pont ends up doing something awful at the end, no spoilers. Because knowing of this true story makes it even worse. You know everything, you know how the story ends but you are just sucked into it so much that it comes off as shocking when it all goes down. This is a movie where I’m very glad I saw it, but it isn’t a movie that I could sit down and watch again. I won’t see this movie again. It’s truly sad to see what happens here other than the death of David. Du Pont comes in between the two brothers who have had each others back since childhood and he begins to distant them. Du Pont becomes something of a father figure for Mark. You want Mark to realize that this man is not right and isn’t helping him and go with David. Bennett Miller does this story justice, one of the best directed movies of the year. He creates this creepy and terrifying atmosphere. It’s very uncomfortable watching this movie from the often creepy music playing (a piano) and even the cinematography shows off the mood of the movie. The picture is very dark, not much color and looks gorgeous. My only small complaint with this movie is the pacing. This is a VERY SLOW PACED MOVIE. This is going to bug some viewers I promise you that. Some will think it’s the most boring movie they will ever see and others won’t mind it. At a running time of 131 minutes it’s a long one to sit through. It’s a quiet movie and there were times where I thought it dragged just a bit but that’s only a small nitpick. This is a short review but trust me, see this movie when you can. It’s on limited release in theaters right now so unless you find a theater near you rent it on redbox. It’s a movie where you will watch it one time and won’t have the urge to see it again. All of the actors are amazing in their roles and I hope Carell takes home big prizes for this amazing performance. I give Foxcatcher an A.
