Steve Reeves (2nd) & John Grimek (1st) @ 1948 Mr Universe - NABBA John Grimek and Steve Reeves were tied. This is when Bob Hoffmann proposed to determine the winner from a comparison of the gymnastic abilities of both men. It is speculated that this idea of deciding the winner was proposed by Hoffman since he used John Grimek in advertising products, magazines, machines and various products. Hoffman knew that with Grimek’s background in Acrobats it would be hard for Steve Reeves to win. Reg Park, who attended the contest, noted that if Mr Universe had to nominate the most handsome man, which it was, Steve Reeves should have won. A few days later, Steve Reeves, invited to Cannes, where he took the title of Mr. World. *I have no definite basis to take the above anecdote as true or false. Would appreciate if anyone would want to chip in on this.
