Steve Tilleraas and Ralph Lab will be the featured Studio 706 artists during the First Friday Art Walk, October 4, 2013 from 6 to 9 p.m. at 706 7th Avenue South. Refreshments will be served. Steve Tilleraas has been dabbling in photography for a number of years, concentrating on family, landscapes, flowers and wildlife. Often taken on hikes around his family’s cabin west of Chisholm Mountain above the steel bridge at Hardy Creek, these photographs are now used as subjects for paintings in acrylics, gouache, or most often, oils. Brilliant new landscape paintings and photos of rock outcrops, twisted pines, and distant mountains, as well as stunning florals and wildlife close-ups such as a new blue bird photo are among the unique offerings. Culbertson native Ralph Lab’s first experience with art was in the early 1990s when after retiring he decided to try painting landscapes on small pieces of wood using acrylics. Eventually he took painting lessons until heart bypass surgery intervened. After recovery he resumed painting, adopting oils as his primary medium. Recent artworks have featured dramatic renditions of cowboys and livestock silhouetted against colorful backgrounds. Lab, a veteran himself, has employed similar techniques to complete paintings with patriotic themes and send them to active troops and their families as a way of honoring their service. Seal Team 6 and Passing in Review are examples of military paintings to be displayed at his show. For more information call 781-4635.
