Steve signing in at 7:27 AM. Clear skies this morning with chilly temperatures, though several degrees warmer than yesterday. Latest observations: Foothills AP 32°, Granite Falls 35°, Nebo 37°, Morganton 38° and Hickory 40°. Expect sunny skies and mild temperatures for Election Day, highs near 70° along the I-40 corridor and upper 50s to lower 60s in the higher elevations. Later this afternoon we should see an increase in high clouds from a broad system that presently stretches from Illinois to Texas. Thickening highs clouds should hold our temperatures up tonight and lows Wednesday morning should be mainly in the 40s. Wednesday itself is likely to be a pretty nice day overall but with more clouds than today as the system in the middle of the CONUS gets closer. Expect afternoon highs a few degrees cooler than today. Rain showers become more likely after midnight Wednesday and continue most, if not all, of the day Thursday as the frontal system temporarily stalls over the area. Not until a secondary surge of colder air pushes in late Thursday will we begin to see a trend toward clearing conditions. Highs Thursday should be similar to those of Wednesday, with the chance of an isolated thunderstorm or two embedded in those showers but nothing severe expected. Late Thursday night into the weekend and beyond, expect colder weather to settle in once more with highs Friday back down to the low 50s. Afternoon readings mainly in the 50s, morning lows in the 30s should persist through early next week. Another cold front could arrive late in the weekend with less fanfare than Wednesdays, but below normal temperatures should persist through the end of the seven day period.
