Steve signing in at 7:40 AM. High thin overcast at about 25,000 feet covers the four county area this morning. Temperatures range from 44° at the Foothills AP to 52° at Hickory. Conover reports 48°, Table Rock 46°, Marion and Brindletown 45° and 48.7° at Burke Weather HQ in Valdese. These high clouds should hang around most of the day and possibly into the evening as a disturbance along yesterdays frontal boundary to our east moves northeastward and out to sea. I see no rain concerns with this system for us, maybe a few light sprinkles for communities well to our east such as Fayetteville or Goldsboro. The big impact here is that the cloud cover should hold down our temperatures this afternoon. Most of us will be around 70°. As the cloud deck thins out tonight and Saturday, we should see slightly warmer temperatures Saturday afternoon in the mid 70s. With gusty westerly winds Sunday, our afternoon temperatures could be 10° higher in the low to mid 80s but there could be a fire danger Sunday afternoon. Yesterday I said I thought next week would be mainly dry with sunny and warm weather. This morning Im beginning to wonder a bit. We should have predominately sunny skies but a back door front starts to take shape over the mid-Atlantic Sunday afternoon and could sharpen a bit as it drops southward and westward into northeastern North Carolina on Monday. High pressure builds over eastern Canada at that time. Right now it appears that the back door front should stall out over northeastern North Carolina but I know from experience with wedges and back door fronts that they never do what theyre supposed to. Usually they turn out to be stronger than theyre forecast to be, especially three days in advance. I wouldnt be surprised to see this front sag farther south, maybe even into the I-40 corridor Monday afternoon. A weak disturbance could trigger some showers and thunderstorms on Monday also so while the forecast indicates dry and low 80s right now, dont be surprised if that changes in the next day or two. This back-door front may be with us through Thursday of next week drifting back and forth across Virginia and North Carolina. I think Tuesday should be mostly dry but more showers and storms of the widely scattered variety are possible Wednesday and maybe more widespread on Thursday. Temperatures each afternoon should reach the low to mid 80s after overnight lows in the 50s. The next significant frontal system appears to cross our counties on Mothers Day. That could be our next opportunity for significant thunderstorms.
