Steve signing in at 7:52 AM. Some fog is reported across parts of the four county area this morning, visibility at the Foothills AP is one-quarter mile. Fog is also reported at Burke Weather HQ. Drive carefully because the nature of this mornings fog is that you could drive into a sudden fog bank, say, on US-64 or even I-40. Be alert if you see deteriorating conditions. Temperatures range from 48° at Old Fort to 56° at Hickory with 54.7° reported at Burke Weather HQ in Valdese. Other readings include 50° at Marion, Brindletown and Granite Falls, 49° at Table Rock, 52° at Hudson and Nebo and 53° at Morganton. Expect sunny skies with very warm temperatures today in the upper 80s to around 90°. You may see one or two cumulus building in the mountains but rain chances are low today. That gradually changes on Friday, skies will start out sunny but cloud over in the afternoon with scattered showers and thunderstorms developing, first to our southwest and the mountains then overspreading the entire four-county area by evening. As a weakening frontal system moves in, showers and a few storms should continue through the overnight into Saturday morning. Brief heavy rain and cloud to ground lightning are possible but severe storm probabilities are pretty low. Scattered showers and storms could continue in the mountains through the day on Saturday but there could actually be a little clearing later Saturday in the foothills. Temperatures will be about 10 degrees cooler than what were going to experience today. It looks like well actually be able to salvage Sunday and enjoy at least one good day this coming weekend. Expect sunny skies with highs in the low to mid 80s. Monday may not be too bad either with very low chances of rain. Even Tuesday should be mostly dry but I think our rain chances increase later in the day as another, perhaps more organized frontal system approaches. The long-range forecast models are about 12 hours apart right now on the eastward progress of next weeks frontal system, partially due to the development of low pressure off the Florida coast. The low may act to slow down the front or even stall it for a short while over the Carolinas. This low almost looks like it wants to acquire some tropical characteristics. However, right now, the core of this system appears to stay just offshore and other than its interaction with the approaching cold front, doesnt seem to have a major impact on our coastal areas here. It may have more impact as it moves northward up the mid-Atlantic and southern New England coast but it looks pretty weak right now and by the time it strengthens its out of our area and over much cooler water. May bear watching, though, as will the front itself since it looks better organized and could produce a few strong storms in our area by Wednesday or Thursday of next week.
