Steve signing in at 8:13 AM. Mostly cloudy skies, temperatures around 70° along the I-40 corridor, mid 60s in the higher elevations. Closest precipitation is an area of showers and thunderstorms to the south and west of Charlotte over York County SC and Gaston County NC, moving slowly northward. Intensity of this area has ticked up a bit and there is a chance that it could build into Catawba and eastern Burke Counties this morning if it holds together. Biggest threats are cloud to ground lightning and heavy rain. In fact, over the next several days, heavy rain is the main threat from any area of showers or thunderstorms that develops due to the weak steering flow aloft and slow movement, along with the high moisture content of the atmosphere. Temperatures today are likely to stay in the 70s, possibly edge into the low 80s Tuesday, mid 80s Wednesday. Showers and thunderstorms are possible each day with the heaviest activity mostly to our south and east closer to the Charlotte and Gastonia areas and the SC Upstate. However heavy rain is possible just about anywhere in this moisture-laden air. We will not see much sun today, if any at all. A little more sun is possible Tuesday and partly sunny conditions are possible Wednesday with scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon. A frontal system approaches Thursday moving into the western Carolinas Friday. Ahead of the front, more thunderstorms are likely to develop Thursday afternoon and a few of these could be strong to severe. Once here, the front just dies out Friday into the weekend. After Thursday, it looks like our rain chances should diminish and we could be looking at mainly dry weather for the upcoming weekend.
