Stewart Crameri has broken ranks with the “Essendon 34” and hired top criminal lawyer Rob Stary to lead his defence against doping allegations. Footscray VFL player Brent Prismall, a Bulldogs player welfare officer, has joined Crameri in seeking independent legal advice from Stary. The pair is among 34 former and current Essendon players accused of using the banned peptide Thymosin beta-4 during the 2012 season. Stary will consider all options including a potential Cronulla-style deal with the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority. He has previously acted for exiled WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, slain underworld kingpin Carl Williams and convicted terror supporter Jihad Jack Thomas. Starys office contacted ASADA on Monday asking for Crameri and Prismalls cases to be fast-tracked, but the players have not cut ties with the player union. The AFLPA has asked to meet with Stary and Bulldogs president Peter Gordon, fearing the move could undermine its efforts to contest ASADAs allegations as a united front. Source: Herald Sun
