Stick to the Plan - We Have Room to Grow! Good Morning Berthoud. Did you see one of these on your door this weekend? Its time to get out the word on the April election. We have two petitions and three Trustees to vote for. Citizens for a Better Berthoud presents its positions on the election below. Below are 4 key reasons why the Town Board’s Haworth annexation should be reversed and why future growth outside the Town’s 2012 growth area should require a vote of Berthoud citizens. 1. Town Board did not follow the Comprehensive Plan - The Haworth property was not eligible for annexation under the 2012 Comprehensive Plan and the Town offered annexation without any public input. Town has over 24,000 acres in the 2012 growth area - enough for decades of growth. The current built area of Town is 1,300 acres. Over 7,000 acres are already annexed. The Town has plenty of room to grow. 2. Berthoud should grow from the inside - out & preserve our rural, small town character - Many of us moved here to avoid the low quality and poorly planned growth of other communities. 3. Town Board placed the interests of one family over the interests of the community - Our elected Trustees have ignored overwhelming public opposition and violated proper process in order to annex west of the 2012 boundary. Instead, they have supported one family’s desire to annex and develop at a higher density than Larimer County allows. 4. Annexation for low density development stretches already limited Town resources – it does not make fiscal sense for Berthoud to take on large new areas when it cannot maintain what it currently has. By the Town’s own admission, the cost of providing Town services to outlying areas is greater than the property tax revenue gained.
