Sticking To Healthy Lifestyle Means Lower Heart-Failure Risk: Womens Health Initiative WASHINGTON, DC — The more they kept their weight in a good range and adhered to certain healthy-lifestyle habits, the less likely they were to have heart failure later on in life: that was the conclusion based on a cohort of >84 000 women who were postmenopausal at baseline and followed more than a decade[1]. The inverse relationship between heart-failure risk and healthy living, based on an index derived from diet, exercise, smoking, and body-mass-index (BMI) criteria, held regardless of the participants history of cardiovascular disease, hypertension, or diabetes, according to the authors, led by Dr Golareh Agha (Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, MA). None had heart failure at baseline. This suggests that a healthy lifestyle is beneficial for protection against HF over and above its benefits in lowering risk for CV disease, hypertension, or diabetes, the group writes. Their analysis based on the Womens Health Initiative (WHI) Observational Study was published in the October 28, 2014 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. The women, who entered the study from 1993 to 1998 at 40 US centers, were assessed using a healthy lifestyle score based on a defined healthy eating index and measures of physical activity, smoking status, and BMI; higher scores meant healthier lifestyle. Of the 84 537 women in the analysis, 1826 (2.16%) developed new heart failure over an average of 11 years.
