Still Tending the Plot Perhaps I will, as were both my mother and father, prove a worthy gardener as growing season wanes – the quality of the crop will be the sole measure of my command of the craft. Drought, pestilence or disease would be but a broken crutch on which to trudge a furrow, should the bounty be spare or the fruit dry and bitter. With hope and faint memory as almanac, in hopeful rows I altared the earth at the season’s waxing, and tithed within what I took to be good seed. If I’ve held to the rite, both in purpose and ritual, fortune and fair weather should find me, finally, stretching for corn, the ears full and familiar, the long, sharp leaves falling gently over my shoulders as if granting an embrace of validation and acknowledgement of my respect.
