Still compared to those A stones throw away from you Our lives have all been relatively easy....Jason Isbell...no kidding. Last night at midnight or so i ventured out in the subfreezing night air to grab snacks at the local convenience store. A young man there, just hanging around, asked me if i knew where he might pick up some work. I asked him where he lived, and he mentioned the name of a local steakhouse, and said he was living in a dumptruck parked behind it. A non running one, aka he was homeless. He had that slight air of a surfer/stoner but a fierce intelligence shone through the cold and nervous laughter as he told me about how he even tried to ask the sheriff if he could sleep in the holding cell at night for warmth, and was told he could but that he would have to work for it, said work being as an informant. He turned it down. Its dismaying and remarkable that in21st century America, every county in America does not have shelters of a sort for the homeless or misfortunate. I drove home, got a couple of insulated hoodies,.my sleeping bag, some food and a little cash for the young guy who was, ironically , standing in a store owned by the richest man in the county, but who did nothing for him.
