Rayya Wa Skeena Kat’s Note: This is a film made of a play, not a regular movie. No subtitles. I haven’t watched it in a while, but think musical comedy? Yikes. Maybe something like Arsenic and Old Lace. (Maqam Description: The story of Egypt’s sister serial killers, Rayya and Skeena, in its finest adaptation yet. The musical comedy examines, for the first time, the history of the sisters, their childhood abuse, oppression, poverty, the extreme cruelty they suffered at the hands of their community, and the critical moment which led to a life of crime. This is one of the funniest and most powerful stage productions in Egyptian theater history with music by Galigh Hamdi, lyrics by Abdel Wahab Mohammad and choreography by Mahmoud Reda. Starring the legendary Suhair El Bably, Shadia, Abdel Min’em Madbouli, and Ahmad Bidayr. Script by Bahgat Qamar, Directed by Hussain Kamal. The legendary play features one of the last performances by Suhair El Bably and Shadia. Running time 240 minutes. ) 2 Dunia (Kiss Me Not On The Eyes) This has subtitles. I couldn’t find a description online and I haven’t watched it in a while, but as I remember, it is a story of a young woman who breaks off her relationship (engagement? Marriage?) to study to be a dancer. If I remember correctly, her male instructor is blind. This is not a particularly upbeat movie, but it has some very nice dance scenes. Production date was 2005. 3. Ala Banda This is another film of a play, rather than a regular movie. One of the stars is Dina and it doesn’t have subtitles, but has lots of nice dance scenes. (Maqam Description: The hysterical comedic play is finally on a two DVD set! Starring Mohammed Hunaydi, Dina, Ahmad Saqqa, Majida Zaki, Ahmad Abd, Muna Abdel Ghani and Sarif Munir. Directed by Salah El Haj. Double DVD. The full play special features include chapter menu, actor biography, and much more. Running time: 300 minutes. CDs!
