Still on the island of Okinawa...and may be for a while longer as a super typhoon is coming straight for this part of Japan! In any case, Okinawa used to be known for the fact that its inhabitants would have the longest life expectancy in the world. All of that took a turn for the worse approximately 15 - 20 years ago when Okinawans got hooked on an offshoot of their bittersweet hosting of a large U.S. Navy base on the main island--Spam! These people love this extremely unhealthy food, and they put it in lots of dishes including onigiri, a triangle of rice wrapped in seaweed which is normally filled with fish. After work yesterday my co-worker took me to a local supermarket just to prove that you can find an entire section of Spam down one of the aisles. On a more serious note, the long-term legacy of Spam is leading to morbid obesity, diabetes, etc. A sad state of affairs for an archipelago formerly known for its vegetable-loving centenarians!
