Still think video games are bad for education? /rolls up sleeves Drake and I will still use Minecraft to practice our Java coding, but EQ: Landmark is where we are slowly migrating to. It is not a very popular game because it is testing platform for other flagship games. This game takes creative building to a whole new level! A whole bunch of new skill sets just opened up! Think, Minecraft on steroids. Drake is learning about voxels. What is a voxel? (in computer-based modelling or graphic simulation) each of an array of elements of volume that constitute a notional three-dimensional space, especially each of an array of discrete elements into which a representation of a three-dimensional object is divided. Its like sculpting a square block into a statue (or whatever you wish it to be). This art/skill is called Voxelmancy. Voxelmancy: The controlled and repeatable manipulation of individual voxels through the use of the intended and unintended side effects of the tools within the game. The video game is your IDE. Instead of using advanced software like 3DMax, you use a character in a game to create. It is quite genius. The person who manipulates voxels is called a Voxelmancer, which is a play off the word necromancer. Its pretty cool. ;) As a bonus, you can sell the designs you make with the in game tools for real world money! Not only do people learn new skills, the skills they learn land them jobs at Sony Online Entertainment and other big names. Still think video games are bad for kids?
