Stingray and Mohamed in black and white. iPhoneOnly. Mohamed is a 36 year old fisherman living in a village a few plots inland from Kilifis beautiful long white sandy Bofa Beach on the north Kenyan coast. At 36 hes still single but still hoping to find himself a wife. Along with a bucket of fish he caught this morning with his homemade spear gun he caught this small size stingray, still alive despite the spear wound and having its sharp poisonous tail barb cut off now eaten by the crows. The stingrays eyes still blinking its wings still fanning angrily in defense although its fight dissipates as the life fades out of it. For 1kg of stingray flesh Mohamed will get 150 Kenya shillings, today an equivalent of USD 1.65 or GPB 1.08. This sting ray he reckons weighs about 9kg once the butcher has removed the unwanted head. Mohameds demeanor is humble, his body and shoulders stoop. Hes fished since dawn and now its 1 oclock, he catches just enough each day, enough to feed himself and not too much so to respect Allah and the ocean. He bends, picks up the sting ray by its gills and walks slowly away from the beach.
