Stockbridge Shelter is on a bald mountaintop along the Long Path - TopicsExpress

Stockbridge Shelter is on a bald mountaintop along the Long Path in Harriman, just off the Menomine Trail. Built in 1928 of timber and stone, its banked into a glacial boulder at the top of Stockbridge Mountain, and when youre there, warming yourself at the indoor fireplaces or chilling with friends around the outside fire ring, its hard to believe youre only an hour from New York. No reservations, no fees to stay in the Harriman shelters (there are nine, scattered along trails throughout the park. Each sleeps about 8). First picture via Harriman Hiker.
