Stocks ended near session highs in choppy trading Monday in the US, with the Dow and S&P 500 closing in positive territory for the fourth-straight session, as investors remained encouraged by signs of progress in the budget deal. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 64.15 points, to end at 15,301.26, lifted by Pfizer and Boeing. The S&P 500 added 6.94 points, to close at 1,710.14. And the Nasdaq rose 23.40 points, to finish at 3,815.27. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, finished near 16. The Russell 2000 small cap index rallied to briefly hit a fresh high. Asian equity markets outside of China rose on Tuesday after U.S. lawmakers hinted at the possibility that a bipartisan U.S. budget deal could be announced soon. Australias S&P ASX 200 hit a new two-week high, Japans Nikkei pared gains and South Koreas Kospi rose to a ten-month high. But the Shanghai Composite underperformed to dip below the flatline. Markets in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Philippines are shut for public holidays. U.S. GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN A month of combat in the U.S. Congress over government spending showed signs on Monday of giving way to a Senate deal to reopen shuttered federal agencies and prevent an economically damaging default on federal debt. GERMAN COALITION TALKS German Chancellor Angela Merkels conservatives and the Social Democrats (SPD) said early on Tuesday they were likely to hold a third round of talks later this week to explore the possibility of forming a coalition government. AUTOS BMWG.DE DAIGn.DE VOWG_p.DE European Union environment ministers on Monday agreed to German demands to scrap an agreement to cap EU car emissions that Berlin argued would cost jobs and damage its premium auto makers. E.ON EONGn.DE, RWE RWEG.DE, EnBW EBKG.DE The four operators of the German long-distance power grid at around 0800 GMT plan to publish the surcharge for renewable energy for next year. The surcharge will rise by almost 1 cent ($0.0136) 6.24 cents per kilowatt hour next year, industry and government sources familiar with the matter said on Monday. Danone reports third-quarter sales on Wednesday, giving the firm an opportunity to brief investors on its problems in China. CASINO The retailer said sales growth accelerated in the third quarter thanks to robust demand in Brazil and an improvement at its Geant hypermarkets in France, where it started to benefit from price cuts introduced at the end of last year. TECHNIP The oil services group said it was awarded a contract worth 100-250 million euros by LLOG Exploration Offshore for the development of the Delta House field, located in the Mississippi Canyon area of the U.S. Gulf of Mexico. BOUYGUES Bouygues and Sintra won a contract for the improvement of Iqaluit International Airport, in the Arctic North of Canada. Bouygues said the deal was worth about 170 million euros for the companies. VALLOUREC The tubes company said it had been selected to supply premium pipes for the offshore Xerelete field in Brazil, of which Total TOTF.PA became an operator in June 2012.
