People exposed to high levels of silica dust, which typically occurs occupationally, risk developing the incurable lung disease silicosis, chronic obstructive respiratory disease, bronchitis, lung cancer, scleroderma, renal disease and respiratory failure. Dust may have physical effects on plants such as blockage and damage to stomata, shading, abrasion of leaf surface or cuticle, and cumulative effects e.g. drought stress on already stressed species.
