Stone out hurt Source: The National, Monday September 2nd, 2013 PACIFIC Games champion Nelson Stone is out of the Mini Games in Wallis and Futuna. Stone, who is the 400m national record holder, was not with the Papua New Guinea athletics team that left for Wallis and Futuna on Saturday. Stone was ruled out at the eleventh hour on medical grounds. “Nelson sustained an injury to his right hamstring in training three weeks ago and there has been insufficient time for it to heal,” Athletics PNG president Tony Green said. Stone had a hamstring scare on his left leg before the Olympic Games in London last year but was able to manage that and produced a top performance in the British capital, running 46.71s. Papua New Guinea will now be represented in the 400m in Wallis and Futuna by the East New Britain trio of Theo Piniau, Kaminiel Matlaun and Kevin Kapmatana. Almost 300 students from the National Capital District competed at the Southern Region Athletics Championships at the University of Papua New Guinea last weekend. Among them was the national squad which was in the capital city for a weeklong camp before heading to Wallis and Futuna on Saturday for the Pacific Mini Games. Strong winds made it impossible for athletes to run good times. Toea Wisil opted to compete alongside the men in the 100m and hung onto the back of the pack as her older brother Kupun won. The men’s 400m saw another impressive performance from Kaminiel Matlaun, who won clearly from Kevin Kapmatana and Paul Pokana. Some good races were seen in the men’s middle and long distance races with Andipas Georasi, his brother David, Kupsy Bisamo and Sapolai Yao all running well in at least one event. Shirley Vunatup impressed in the women’s 200m to win by over half a second from Donna Koniel and Venessa Waro. In the 100m sprint Helen Philemon edged Venessa Waro.
