Stones In Purse The Messenger of Allah (سيدنا محمد ﺻﻠﯽ الله ﺗﻌﺎﻟﯽٰ ﻋﻠﯿﮧ ﻭﺍٓﻟﮧ ﻭﺳﻠﻢ) said, “There may be a faster who does not gain from his fasting but hunger and thirst.” [Ibn Majah] A wise man said, “The one who shows off in good works is like the one who fills his purse with pebbles and leaves for the market to buy food. If he opens it (to offer it to) the seller he will be stoned with it. He gains nothing but the peoples inquiry about what fills his purse, nothing more. Similarly, the one who shows off in good works will have no value attached to his works but the peoples saying that he did good and he will not be rewarded in the Hereafter.” Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) says, “And We shall turn to whatever deeds they did (in this life), and (because of their showing-off) We shall make them as floating dust scattered about.” [Al-Quran: Surah AI-Furqan, Ayat 23]
