Stoneybatter & Smithfield People’s History Project to mark centenary of Church Street tenement collapse. Weekend of 6th and 7th September, at approximately 8.45pm. Our next big event is on 6th and 7th September to mark the 100th anniversary of the collapse of the Church Street tenements during the 1913 Lockout. The weekend will incorporate a historical walking tour; a public talk with Chris Corlett, author of Darkest Dublin; the launch of a booklet on the collapse; a photographic display and a social night. So please make space in your diary for what promises to be a really interesting weekend. o n Tuesday 2nd September, 1913 two tenement houses on Church Street, in Dublin’s north west inner city, collapsed and killed seven people. The tragedy served to expose the appalling living conditions experienced by Dublin’s working class and occurred against the backdrop of the biggest labour dispute in Irish history: the 1913 Lockout. To mark the centenary of this tragedy, the Stoneybatter and Smithfield People’s History Project is hosting a series of events over the weekend of Friday 6 th and Saturday 7 th September. The weekend will comprise a historical walking tour of Dublin’s inner city, taking in some of the locations of the 1913 lockout and the social and living conditions of Dublin’s working class. It will end at Church Street where a wreath will be laid at the site of Nos. 66 and 67 in memory of those who died in the tenement collapse. This will be followed by the launch of our booklet on the history of the Church Street tenement collapse in the Cobblestone bar, Smithfield where we will be joined by musicians and singers. There will also be a public talk on the tenements with Christiaan Corlett, author of ‘Darkest Dublin: The story of the Church Street disaster and a pictorial account of the slums of Dublin in 1913’ and over the weekend we will also have a photographic display and projection of images of the tenements in the local area. We hope you can join us for what promises to be an interesting weekend of events and we would appreciate if you could forward this to your friends and colleagues. We will post further details over the coming weeks and will have posters and leaflets for distribution. In the meantime please share our Facebook event, where almost 100 people have already indicated their intention to attend. facebook/StoneybatterSmithfieldPeoplesHistoryProject/events/500227436712665
