Stop A Behavior Before It Starts: Look For Your Dogs Tell Normally, before Murphy humps a dog, he will gently sniff his/her back. Before Puddin humps a dog, she always lifts her right shoulder. So if I dont want my dogs to hump, I can calmly interupt them when I see the tell but before the humping starts. It prevents the dog from performing the undersirable behavior. Watching for a tell doesnt just apply to humping. Ive seen some dogs measuring right before they jump a fence. Somes dog get hard eyes or glazed eyes right before they snap or bite. Or course for bites, it might not be safe to interupt. Its probably better to immediately stop whatever you are doing that made the dogs eyes glaze over. Of course interupting does not mean you need to startle or scare your dog. You can toss a toy, ask for a behavior, ask for a positively trained leave it then give a treat, etc.. (you dont need to toss a can of pennies) youtu.be/qsLzlCYSFtY
