“Stop Ebola Hypocrisy Now” – President Koroma Challenges Western Rural By State House Communications Unit As government continues to put stringent measures in place to eradicate the spreading Ebola virus, President Ernest Bai Koroma on Wednesday 5th November admonished parliamentarians, councilors, tribal and religious leaders and village headmen in the Western Rural District to bolster their efforts and enforce the bye-laws to speedily contain the disease. Whilst calling on the authorities to be honest and committed to the fight against Ebola, President Koroma urged them to effectively collaborate among themselves and rise to the occasion with firm commitment and action to put the situation under control. He stated that the local authorities were placed in a critical position to contain the disease, and added that locals in their various communities must stop the traditional practices of burying the dead, washing of corpses, touching the sick and observance of funeral rites after burial. “This is time for action and you must stop the hypocrisy in the fight against Ebola,” he warned. “There is no time for meetings and you must enforce the law and take out the sick.” He also gave a stern warning to bike riders, boat owners and motor drivers that are still in the habit of transporting the sick and the dead and all that are using the Ebola crisis at the expense of the lives of Sierra Leoneans. The president emphasized that the State of Emergency was still in force and will continue until Ebola is adequately addressed. He insisted that the Police will continue to enforce the law and will be firm about it, and furthered that in an effort to contain the situation government has decided to bring in the military as the new strategy that includes a command and control structure that will be replicated across the country, saying the new strategy will effectively coordinate the activities and address the challenges to make an appropriate response. He lamented over the fact that the country was doing well and was even lauded as been among the fastest reformers in the world, building the economy and democracy when Ebola struck. “We don’t want to continue in this situation, we have the capacity and we must endeavour to return to normalcy and reposition the country to where we were,” he explained. The Commander-in-Chief noted that the only way Ebola can be defeated is to break the chain of transmission. He urged the public to be honest, open and committed, whilst reiterating the need to stop body to body contact. He also reiterated the need for surveillance officers, contact tracers and food distributors to be recruited within the communities to maximize the effectiveness of the exercise.
