Stories From the Studio-Krayzie Bone I get a phone call in the spring from a guy who says Bone Thugs N Harmony are looking for studio time, are you available today? My response was I will make myself available for Bone Thugs. There was about a 2 year span in my late teens where Bone Thugs N Harmony was the only thing I was listening to so I was a bit taken aback by this call. He told me Great, I just have a couple calls to make and Ill call you back if we decide to use you. I freed my schedule and wasnt too convinced they would actually come in because in this industry, people say a lot of things that never happen. I received another call saying were coming in, how soon can you be there. I headed down the the Rhythm Lab in disbelief and getting a bit nervous on the drive, pretty sure the thought that kept running through my head was holy crap. When I got in to the studio, I set up a session in Logic, I usually use Pro Tools but Ive found Logic to be more efficient in rap sessions. I set up a microphone in the vocal booth and the buzzer rang. The first man up the stairs introduced himself as Krayzie Bone, he brought a young rapper from Cleveland in to cut this track with him, his name is Caine. Krayzie gave me a beat to load up and told me he wanted to start with the hook and he brought up the lyrics on his phone and went in to the booth. When we started recording, the engineer side of me took over and all the butterflies and nervousness disappeared, this was just another client. The hook ended up having 20 vocal layers when it was done and sounded so cool, I would never have thought to record hip hop vocals this way and it was a great learning experience. I did a quick mix of the vocals and Krayzie said we wanted the hook to repeat 3 times every 16 bars and keep the playing until he asked me to stop it. I looped the song and Caine pulled out a note book and Krayzie took out his phone and the two of them started writing out lyrics for the verses. After about a half hour, they both gave me a nod indicating they were ready to go. Krayzie was up first, he went through the verse in sections so he didnt run out of breath, when he made a mistake hed say take it back and when he was happy with a line hed say next one. The verse had 8 vocal layers in it when he was done and then it was Caines turn. When Caine wrapped up, I asked Krayzie what he was recording this song for and he said it was for the Fast and Furious 7 soundtrack. I saved the session and sent it off to the producer and he had another artist record one more verse to it before it was done. They left to get down to the club they were performing at that night and I sat there thinking, I cant believe that just happened. The experience was incredible and if the song makes the cut for the Fast and Furious, it would be the icing on the cake for me even though I will not be credited on the song (the life of an engineer sometimes). The song has not been officially released so this is the only audio I could find of the song, its a live performance of the song, Gas Up, and the backing vocals in this clip are the ones recorded at Rhythm Lab.
