Story #802 Anonymous BLAINE AND THE ARMY OF IMPS My Uncle Blaine was honorably discharged from the military. Even when he came home, there was still fight in him. Nobody messes with him. He doesnt make trouble but dont run from it neither. Hes really quiet most of the time. He quit drinking, took in his only son, and works as a welder in town. He drives his old truck and just bought a sedan from a friend who was moving back east. He hunts but loves animals. He threw a man down a hill for killing kittens, broke the mans ribs, and busted his kneecap with a crowbar. He broke up a dogfighting ring that tried to set up on his property. Uncle Blaine is one bad, good guy. I respect him. He only hunts to eat and ran poachers away. Ma said even the illegal aliens see Blaine and run back to Mexico. LOL! This little girl was a friend of Blaines son, my cousin Jessie. She was being abused by a drunk relative and ran all the way to their place alone one night. Blaine called the tribal police but everyone knows, they dont come right away. So he called Ma to come out there. I went too. We got there, I heard howling like wild dogs out over the hill. It wasnt like coyotes, it sounded more growly and deep. We looked out there and I saw an orange glow like a dim fire. Then I saw some little things with jack-o-lantern heads. There were about five of them and they were coming toward the house. We ran to Blaines front door and pounded hard. He opened the door and we flew in. He saw what was coming. He told his son, the girl, and Ma to go in the back, shut the curtains, get on the floor, and dont look out. Something was after the girl. Blaine got out his rifle, threw me his shotgun, got a torch out of the stove, grabbed a medicine pouch off a nail, and told me to follow him. He said not to look at their faces and aim for their feet. I knew how to shoot since I was seven. He kicked the door open, charged out like bull, I was right after him. He threw the torch into the air and blasted it. The embers flew everywhere! We were just in time, those little things were climbing on the fence and about to come over into the yard. They moved back when the embers flew. I shot at their feet and it seems like they sprouted wings like bats. Weird! These things were skinny, blackish, had pumpkin heads with ugly faces, and sounded like dogs! IDK what they were. I aimed and shot at their feet. They wobbled around and tried to get away. Uncle Blaine kissed his pouch, said something and threw it over the fence. I didnt hear it land on the ground. It got really dark and they scattered. It was quiet after that. I never talk too much about this but thought I kept it hush long enough. I still never asked Uncle Blaine what those were but I think I figured it out.
