Story Assignment If anyone should carry “bohemian swag” it is Cole Thomas. Instead, Cole is one of the most “official” looking individuals one might encounter in an artsy venue. Simply, Cole doesn’t quite fit in, except for perhaps on an internal aesthetic or a spiritual level. After all, art feels as intrinsic to Cole as walking past falling leaves on a cool, autumn afternoon. And now Cole, returning to college to weave literature with history, history with political science, political science with social justice, and social justice with art, is determined to keep showing up, but in a more recognizable and influential manner. Born and raised in Virginia with a few odd years in Kentucky and in New York, Cole Thomas is knocking at the door of the “Old Head” habitat, applying to curmudgeon camp, and strolling – sometimes kicking and screaming– over the proverbial hill. Like many a frustrated yet ever hopeful artist, Cole practices writing and captures photographs. Cole acts, recites poetry, creates collage, and nurtures the arts in small and not-as-small ways. Cole, who danced in “Hello Dolly!” in the 1970’s, performed in “Once Upon a Mattress” in the 1980’s, sung in “The Pirates of Penzance” in the 1990’s, and played Adaperle in “The Wiz” in the 00’s asks only, “What next?” Publishing a novel? Producing an already-written play? Selling mesmerizing lyrics to some unsuspecting celebrity? That is always the big mystery now; isn’t it? Perhaps fulfilling a simple purpose that suits, strengthens, develops, and encourages those in Cole’s presence is a fine enough direction to take, presently anyway. Something that balances compassion with a ready kick in the pants (Cole’s own special gift and value) would do just fine right through here. Still, it must have color and heart, though… and movement. *Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a class in theater* #RealTalkThough
