Story at-a-glance As of this month, pet owners living in New York can choose to be buried next to their beloved animal companions in licensed pet cemeteries. New regulations recently adopted by the New York Department of State allow burial of human cremains in pet cemeteries. According to the formal notice published in the New York State register in June, “A sizable segment of the New York community articulated a desire to be able to have their cremains buried with their pet remains.” The newly enacted regulations will put an end to a three-year dispute between the family of a late NYPD officer and the state of New York. Officer Thomas Ryan’s dying wish was to be buried beside his three dogs and his wife at Hartsdale Pet Cemetery, which had been interring the remains of human pet owners since the 1920s. A few years ago, the state asked the cemetery to stop the practice while it took a closer look. Fortunately, Officer Ryan can at last be laid to rest next to his family at Hartsdale. Unlike New York, most states haven’t addressed the specific issue of burying animals and their human guardians in the same location. If you would like to buried with a pet, you should plan ahead to give yourself time to research local statutes and hopefully find a nearby cemetery that is willing to accept both of you.
